Revelation - Chapter Two

The Faithful Church - Verses 8 - 11

The Church at Smyrna was a  church that suffered tremendously for the cause of Christ.  Christ encouraged them not to be fearful.  This Church was only one of two churches out of seven in Revelation that was not rebuked by Christ.  Their motto was:  Trust & Obey.

I.  A Church Remembered - vs.8.  the church in Smyrna  Often, people feel forgotten when under tremendous stress.  Jesus assures them that they are not forgotten.

II.  A Church Reminded - vs.9

• Reminded Of Their Works - vs. 9a  I know thy works...

• Reminded Of Their Worth - 9b  ...but thou art rich...

• Reminded Of Their War - 9c  ...the synagogue of Satan

 

II.  A Church Reassured - vs.10

• No Need To Fear - 10a  Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer

• No Need To Fuss / God's Plan Is Greater Than Satan's - 10.b >Satan's Plan Has Limitations - the devil shall cast some of you into prison                                                                   >God's Plan Is Glorification - I will give thee a crown of life.

 

II.  A Church Rewarded - vs.11

• The Help To Endure - 11a  let him hear what the Spirit saith

• The Hope To Enlist - 11b  He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death

The sufferings Christians experience are always intended to be the means of developing a growing dependence on God and a more Christ-like character (Hebrews 12:11).

Suffering also causes us to cry out to God for deliverance, and when He does deliver us, we are able to comfort those who are likewise suffering, 2 Corinthians 1:3-7.

Thus, God is loving and merciful even when, "for the present," He allows trials and sufferings to come in our lives.
